Recently, Slack rolled out certifications called the Slack Certified Admin program and the Slack Certified Developer program. The programs hone in on skills necessary to best utilize Slack.
Whether you use Slack more on the enterprise level or as a developer, getting a Slack certification only enhances your skills and boosts your career. Official Slack certifications can be shared on social media websites and resumes to strengthen your list of skills. With over 12 million daily users and thousands of major companies using Slack, a Slack certification is a growing necessity as the site becomes more and more regular in the workplace.
How to become a Slack Certified Administrator:
The administrator program is best tailored for candidates who have some experience with Slack already, particularly those who have been administrators or owners of channels. That said, even if you have no experience with Slack, the program still offers valuable skills.
Demand for experienced Slack administrators has been growing as more and more companies begin shifting away from email. With a certification in Slack Admin, you can work for Slack as a customer or services partner or market yourself as an independent contractor helping companies transition to Slack. The need for certified Slack administrators is there; the course and exam bundle, priced at only $300, is a cost-effective way to improve and showcase your Slack skills.
The prep course, priced alone at $150, is a way to familiarize yourself with elements of Slack. Some of these elements include user provisioning, data security, admin roles, channel structure, and more. The prep course is not required to take the exam, also priced alone at $150, though it is highly recommended.
The exam is formatted as 60 multiple choice questions in the allotted time of 90 minutes. With a passing grade of 65% or higher, your Slack Administration certification will be sent to you. If needed, you can schedule a second exam attempt.
Share your credentials on social media websites and begin building a simpler and more productive Slack experience for your team. You can now onboard and teach other Slack admins, consult and bring Slack to new teams, and be able to tackle admin solutions and overall Slack configuration.
Your certification is valid for 18 months before you need to pass the exam again.
How to become a Slack Certified Developer:
If you have experience developing apps, taking the Slack developer course and exam will increase your knowledge of Stack’s APIs and understanding of how to build an effective app within Slack. Typically, candidates are already well-versed in the Slack program and how to build apps.
Candidates should already be comfortable in at least one programming language. Slack developers typically use Python, NodeJS, or Java, but any language that can send and receive HTTP API calls will work.
The prep course, also bundled with the exam for a price of $300 total, increases familiarity with reading and creating JSON objects, developing web applications, installing web APIs and event-based API protocols, and creating Slack components and apps on Slack.
Similarly to the administrative course, the exam is formatted as 60 multiple choice questions in the allotted time of 90 minutes. With a passing grade of 65% or higher, your Slack Developer certification will be sent to you. If needed, you can schedule a second exam attempt. The exam is available to take alone for $150 if you feel comfortable enough to skip the prep course.
An official Slack Developer certification can be shared on social media websites and resumes, and is helpful for consulting work, web developing, and creating a more efficient Slack for your team.
Slack had been planning for the release of these certifications prior to the pandemic, but the move to virtual work has only increased the need for such programs. With more people working from home and relying on virtual sites to streamline work and communication, the demand for experienced Slack administrators increases as well. Some companies, like IBM and Verizon, have specific roles dedicated to Slack administration that standardize working with the tool.
According to Ilan Frank, vice president of enterprise at Slack, the company will also begin offering scholarships for people to be able to afford the programs more easily and obtain Slack credentials.
Whatever field you work in, either in a more administrative role or as a web developer, completing a Slack certification course will boost your resume and knowledge of the Slack website.
